NAME: Ashley van Tol
AGE: 32
LOCATION: California
OCCUPATION: Trick question at this point

When a somewhat recent diagnosis of Lyme kick me on my butt and landed me unable to function well enough to hold a job, I had a lot of reflecting to do. I refuse to be beat down by any little bacterias floating around in my body, I don’t care how many million of them there are. I am determined now more than ever to let my creative arty side take over my life and become my profession. Why I didn’t follow my artistic passions from the beginning is really not an interesting story. I did have an amazing life though.

I graduated from the University of Nevada, Reno in 1999. I spent 6 long months working for at an advertising agency. Um, my boss and I didn’t really get on that well, she was looking for someone a little more submissive and impressionable. She laughed in my face when I told her I was quitting to become a Ski Instructor in Tahoe. Oh well, joke was on her!

I met a boy that first winter, an Australian. It was the accent for sure. Oh, the huge blue eyes were nice too. Anyway, after the season in Tahoe we went and worked in New Zealand how cool is that! Well we spent the next 9 years travelling and skiing together in; Utah, South America, Colorado, Australia, Japan and a whole bunch of other places. Oh, we got married somewhere along the way and we got a dog (don’t tell her she isn’t human, she doesn’t understand).

So as great as that all sounds, and it was, I was sick for most of it. I never let it slow me down, well I tried not to. I went to the doctor, a lot, they never found anything wrong with me. I had decided I was just unfortunate and my body was sensitive. Nothing to cry over just learn to deal with it. I got super sick in the Fall of 2008. This time the doctor wanted to test me for Lyme, you know that tick disease. Seriously I didn’t think much about it. Well it turns out it is a big deal, especially if you don’t get treated right away.

So now I’m being treated and I’m exploring a much more settled life. I have time to visit with my family, cook, sew, and rediscover the passions I have been neglecting up until this point. I love it. I mean I hate feeling like a loser who can’t work but I love doing my art and blogging. I hope that I can make a living now from my creative passions. The skiing passion is on hold for at least 2 years, but it will be there for me when I get back.
